Water Sense

RAIN BARREL SEASON IS HERE!

You can reduce water pollution, lower your water costs, and help preserve Lake Michigan -- all by capturing water from your roof's downspout into a rain barrel.  Rain barrels are fun, and easy to install!

The MMSD Rain Barrel program was created to reduce the amount of storm water entering the District's system, as a part of our Every Drop Counts” campaign.  Rain barrels minimize the impact of storm water on overflows and improving water quality through the controlled release of excess storm water in lawns and gardens.  CLICK HERE to see the list of retail and non-profit organizations that promote and sell rain barrels across the sewer service area, increasing the ease to purchase, while spreading the message of how all in our community can be active in improving water quality in our region.

The MMSD rain barrel comes with a 3” adapter that attaches directly to your downspout (if you have a larger downspout, downsizers can be purchased at any hardware store) a spigot that will fit any normal size garden hose, an overflow spout, and a mesh sack that can be placed on your downspout to catch debris so it does not collect in the barrel.  These are recycled barrels which originally contained soda syrup and are made of thick, durable plastic.

It starts with each drop of water
You can reduce water pollution, lower your water costs, and help preserve Lake Michigan...all by capturing water from your roof's downspout in a rain barrel. Rain barrels are fun, easy to install and move.

RAIN BARRELS store 55 gallons of rainwater from your roof that you can use when it's dry to give thirsty gardens, flowers and trees a drink. Rain barrels help keep excess water out of the sewer system when it rains. They also help prevent rain from becoming polluted stormwater runoff, the biggest remaining threat to clean water in the United States.
