The District recognizes that it is an important partner in creating a strong and vibrant regional economy and diversifying its construction workforce through its training program.
The District, particularly through its S/W/MBE and Local Workforce participation policies, is committed to a workforce that reflects the diversity of its customers and, like other public entities, can have an impact on local poverty through the creation of family supporting jobs.
The primary goals of the District's WDTP Program are to ensure a diverse and qualified workforce exists for its capital projects and to increase the capacity of minority and women owned businesses in the construction and engineering industries to compete for the District's business. The objectives to accomplish this include:
- Diversify sizeable construction-related businesses in the local area.
- Train minorities and women as apprentices and construction managers to allow them access to vacant, higher paying, construction-related jobs.
- Develop methods to promote hiring and retention of minorities and women in local construction-related firms.
- Prepare minority and women-owned businesses to better compete and participate in construction projects, through training, financial strengthening and capacity building.
- Increase the number of minorities and women employed at the District in related positions.
