Jones Island
Jones Island 2005 marks the 80th year of operation for the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan in the City of Milwaukee, Jones Island is where MMSD makes Milorganite - an organic fertilizer that is popular with golf course superintendents and homeowners.
The treatment plant is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

South Shore
Located along Lake Michigan in the City of Oak Creek, the South Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant first went on line in 1968.
At this treatment plant, instead of producing Milorganite, biosolids are sent to anaerobic digesters where microorganisms convert a large part of the biosolids into methane gas. The gas is collected and burned to produce electricity for the plant.

Flushing Station / Alterra Coffee
Now the home of a popular lakefront coffee shop, Alterra. Decades ago MMSD's Flushing Station offered the only form of wastewater treatment in the area.
Built in 1888, the facility was used to pump millions of gallons of fresh Lake Michigan water into the Milwaukee River, which was used as an open sewer in that era.
